A descriptive thesis attempts to present facts as they exist. To support its claims, it uses proofs that are available readily to everyone and reasoning that is obvious to all its readers. The methods used in this type of essay are analysis, measurement, elaboration, interpretation, comparison and contrast.

It can answer what, where, when and how questions, but not why questions. A descriptive research design can use a wide variety of research methods to investigate one or more variables.

Rather than telling a story, a descriptive essay illustrates a specific topic such as a person, place, experience, emotion, event, etc. by means of words. You don’t simply state your experience in this type of essay; on top of that, you let your reader experience the same thing through your descriptions.

For most people, describing is a way of illustrating something with words. You can describe a feeling, a sound, or even an emotion. Descriptive essays are just the same: they help you illustrate something in a way that your reader can see, feel, or hear whatever it is you're talking about.
