Tsotsi themes essay

All of Fugard’s characters are a reflection of the effects of Apartheid. Tsotsi and his gain are healthy young men who should have a job, but because of Apartheid they are sitting around in the middle of the afternoon without work; this is part forces them to corruption, and having to murder for money. It is a reoccurring theme.

The disparities between wealth and poverty and the implications for society when so many are robbed of their childhood, is a common theme in films and novels. In the novel "Tsotsi," by Athol Fugard and the film of the same title, directed by Gavin Hood, these themes are present. The plot of "Tsotsi" differs in the film and the novel.

When he meets Isaiah and he tells him God does not want us to sin, Tsotsi realizes the immortality in his actions. In the face of God, he has not been “good”, and will go to hell; however, Tsotsi chooses to become decent and life his life with morals. He became a different person – David Mondondo – who is selfless, compassionate, and ethical.

In saving others Tsotsi saves himself & his conscious. Examples are shown through the secondary characters or Morris and Boston and MIRAM. When Tsotsi lets Morris live after hours of stalking him, he saved Morris from his ultimate fear of death & saves his own kind-hearted personality, taking one step closer to becoming his old self, David.
